About ; Verity Brightside-Johns
Health Kinesiology has actually been part of my life for much longer than I realised.
I first experienced it when I was six years old, when my family took me to see Jane Thurnell-Read because I was having problems with lactose. I was far too young to take much notice of what she was doing, and as I grew up I completely forgot about it.
Years later, in 2006, I found Health Kinesiology again. This time I was looking for help for my own family and went to see John Payne near Penzance. John was an exceptional practitioner. He made what he was doing look incredibly simple, yet the difference I saw it make was profound.
After a few sessions, I also realised why Jane seemed strangely familiar. She was the same woman I had seen all those years before.
By then, I knew I wanted to learn Health Kinesiology myself. In fact, I had a very strong sense that this was what I was meant to do with my life.
It wasn't until I began training that I understood quite how much was going on beneath what I'd watched John do so effortlessly. That is something I still find fascinating about Health Kinesiology. From the outside it can look remarkably simple. It is quiet, there is very little theatre to it, but underneath is an extraordinarily complex system that takes years to properly understand and master.
Perhaps fittingly, I later discovered that Health Kinesiology itself was developed in the year I was born.
I would have trained with Jane herself, but by the time I was ready to begin my formal training she had retired from teaching and moved on to developing the cryogenic test kits used within Health Kinesiology. That led me to London, where I trained with Franky Kossy at Harley Street.
I qualified in 2017 and continued through the advanced levels of Health Kinesiology. By then I had discovered that the more I learnt, the more there was to learn — which suited me perfectly.
Once qualified, I went straight into private practice. I started in a treatment room within a therapy space, with no particular speciality yet and and never quite knowing what was going to walk through the door next. I found myself working with all sorts of diverse cases, with all sorts of people, and quickly realised that the cases I found most interesting were usually the complicated ones.
I like a challenge. I like making a difference, particularly when the obvious answers haven't worked. Those early years in practice taught me an enormous amount and ultimately shaped the way I work today.
Health Kinesiology gave me an extraordinary foundation, and working with such diverse people soon showed me where I wanted to expand.
HK can be fascinatingly silent. I may be able to identify what the body is asking us to work with, but understandably, some clients want to know more about why they were experiencing what they were going through. That led me into hypnotherapy, something I was already using personally, and eventually to qualifying in Rapid Transformational Therapy.
Other training developed in much the same way. I added APEC, Touch for Health, Emotion, Body and Belief Code because they worked naturally alongside Health Kinesiology and gave me more options within a session.
Ancestral patterns began appearing repeatedly in my work and, at the time, I didn't feel I knew enough about them. So I went and learnt. I trained directly with John Newton in Ancestral Clearing, and it has since become another useful part of the way I work.
I haven't collected qualifications for the sake of collecting them. My training has largely been driven by the people sitting in front of me and what I needed to know to help me work more effectively with them.
One of the teachers who had a particularly important influence on me was Ann Parker. Ann was a remarkable woman, extraordinarily knowledgeable, and devoted much of her life to helping others and teaching what she knew.
I was very fortunate to train directly with her and Sandie to complete the full APEC training they developed together.
Ann sadly left us, surrounded by those she loved, in 2026, but what she taught me continues to form an important part of the way I work today.
When lockdown arrived, moving my practice online was a natural step. I was already accustomed to working remotely with colleagues, family members, very young children who were often far happier wriggling around in their own surroundings, and occasionally animals. I knew the work didn't depend on us being physically in the same room.
I moved my existing clients online and the practice continued without interruption. What changed was its reach. Recommendations were no longer limited by geography, and I began working with clients all over the world.
The virtual practice also removed the travelling, waiting rooms and other practicalities that could sometimes get in the way of clients being able to completely relax, let go and release, while working from the comfort and privacy of their own surroundings.
My understanding of relationship recovery isn't purely professional. I also have personal experience of rebuilding life after a damaging relationship and, more importantly, of what it means to genuinely move beyond it. Today I am fortunate to know what a healthy, loving relationship feels like — something I once believed might be out of reach.
I stepped away from professional practice when I had my youngest. We had a difficult start and she needed far more of my time and attention than I had anticipated.
Although I wasn't working professionally during that time, I never really stopped. My skills became particularly important within my own family — life can be complicated on many levels, even when we put on a brave face — so I continued learning and using everything I had spent so many years developing.
Over that time, the direction in which I want to focus my practice has become increasingly clear. The cases I've always been most excited by are the complicated ones — particularly when somebody has already tried the obvious channels and hasn't found the change they were looking for.
So I am putting a name to what I've really been doing all along: specialising in complex cases.
